Under what conditions can you sail without a license?

Although in most cases it is necessary to have a qualification to govern a boat, there is what is called “title exception”, which implies that certain vessels can be governed by people who do not have any nautical qualification, as established by the RD 875/2014.

Exceptions

For the so-called title exception to exist, which implies that a A person without a nautical license can handle a boat, this must meet a series of characteristics:

  • If it is a motor boat, its length must not reach 5 meters and it cannot be a jet ski (which have their own qualification).
  • In the case of sailboats, the maximum permitted length is extended up to 6 meters.
  • Regarding power, cannot exceed 15 HP, which corresponds to 11.26 kilowatts.
  • You should always navigate by day and only on days when visibility is good enough.
  • The person steering the boat must be adult.
  • You can never get over it 2 miles away from the coast, port or place of shelter (taking into account that the beach is not considered a place of shelter).

The lowest qualification in terms of powers is the navigation license, formerly headline and offers greater powers without the need to take any type of exam.

What boats can you take if you don't have a license?

If you are going to rent a boat to spend the day at sea and you do not have any kind of nautical license, take a look at the following tips, they will be very useful:

  • Remember that these are ships with a limited power: the more occupants and cargo, the slower you will sail.
  • Follow the rental company's instructions regarding routes and most suitable places to drop anchor.
  • If he weather forecast is not favorable, it is best to postpone the departure to another day: safety comes first.
  • Children and adults count equally regarding the maximum occupancy of the boat: remember that the maximum for this type of boat is usually 4 people.
  • Turn off the engine while bathing and do not turn it on again while there are passengers in the water.

Safety Basics

Although it is possible to do so, it is not advisable for the person responsible for steering the boat to have no knowledge of nautical safety. Among other things, it is important:

  • Identify the beaconing channels, so that they can be used conveniently.
  • Do not approach the beaches, especially if there are bathers.
  • Respect the presence of divers, which are identified by a white and blue flag or an orange or red buoy.
  • Do not exceed the port speed limits navigation.
  • Act according to the instructions of the International regulations for preventing collisions at sea, the ignorance of which does not exempt one from compliance.
