How are PER and GNP different?

If you are thinking about getting your first nautical permit, you may have certain doubts between the different training and certificates that can be obtained. Once the professional or more complicated titles have been ignored.

Do you know the differences between the PER and the GNP, the two most affordable? In this article we explain it to you in depth, so you can make the right decision.

In case you are interested, in this article we talked about all the types of boat license.

Attributions of the PER and the GNP

He GNP (Basic Navigation Pattern) is the simplest nautical title that exists and enables you to govern vessels of up to 8 meters in length at a maximum distance of 5 miles from the coast both day and night.

For his part, the PER (Recreational Boat Skipper) is a slightly more specific course and will allow you to govern boats up to 15 meters in length in their basic powers and up to 24 in the advanced ones, at a maximum distance of 12 miles from the coast, just over 22 kilometers.

Do these titles allow extensions?

As we have already mentioned, the PER has the possibility of making some complementary navigation practices 24 hours, which double the maximum permitted steering length, but which, however, do not allow increasing the distance to the permitted coast, except in the case of navigation between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

Besides, both degrees allow you to carry out complementary practices of 16 hours of sailing, which enable them to govern this type of vessels.

Differences between the course of GNP and PER

In both cases, it is possible to prepare the theoretical part of the exam in an academy or on your own, although the agenda is noticeably smaller in the case of GNP, since it is only required to study up to topic 6 of those included in the PER.

Sailing at night is a unique experience, but it also requires special caution and preparation. The lack of natural light and limited visibility make it difficult to navigate.
