What is the Yacht Skipper Exam like?

He Yacht Skipper title It is a certification that enables its holder to act as a person responsible for recreational boats. With this qualification, greater powers are acquired and the permitted navigation area is expanded compared to the title of Recreational Boat Skipper (PER).

Yacht Skippers have the authority to govern vessels up to 24 meters in length and can sail up to a maximum distance of 150 nautical miles from the coast.

Requirements to Take the Exam and Obtain the Yacht Skipper Title

In order to take the exam and obtain the title of Yacht Skipper, it is necessary to meet certain requirements established by maritime legislation. The main requirements are:

  1. Being of legal age: The applicant must be at least 18 years of age to access the Yacht Skipper exam.
  2. Have the Title of Recreational Boat Skipper (PER): It is essential to have the PER title before taking the Yacht Skipper exam. The PER degree is a prerequisite to access the higher level certification.
  3. Pass the corresponding theoretical exam: You must pass a theoretical exam that evaluates knowledge in different subjects related to navigation and maritime safety.
  4. Carry out safety and navigation practices: In addition to the theoretical part, it is necessary to carry out safety and navigation practices that provide the practical experience necessary for the safe handling of larger vessels.

What is the Yacht Skipper Exam like?

The Yacht Skipper exam consists of two main modules: the generic module and the navigation module.

Generic Module:

  • Duration: 45 minutes.
  • Content: This module evaluates knowledge of safety at sea and meteorology.
  • Questions: 10 questions on safety at sea and 10 questions on meteorology will be presented. To pass this module, you must correctly answer at least 5 questions in each of the mentioned areas.

Navigation Module:

  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes.
  • Content: In this module, knowledge of navigation theory and navigation charts will be evaluated.
  • Questions: The navigation module will include 10 questions on navigation theory and 10 questions on navigation charts. To pass this module, you must correctly answer at least 5 navigation theory questions and 7 navigation chart questions.

Navigation Questions

How is the Yacht Skipper exam corrected?

The correction of the Yate Pattern exam is carried out using a double assessment criterion.

a) Global Correction: To pass the exam in its entirety, the applicant must correctly answer at least 28 questions from all the subjects evaluated. In certain specific areas, a maximum number of errors allowed is established: 3 errors maximum in navigation theory and 5 errors maximum in chart navigation.

b) Correction by Thematic Modules: It is possible to pass the exam by modules if the specific criteria for each subject that makes up the modules are met. The approval of a module will remain valid for the two following calls in which Yacht Skipper exams are carried out.

Who calls the exams in each CCAA?

The Yacht Skipper exams are called by the maritime authorities of the different autonomous communities in Spain. Some of the entities in charge of the call are the Andalusian Sports Institute, the General Directorate of Fisheries in Asturias, the Department of Agriculture in Catalonia, among others.

By obtaining the title of Yacht Master, sailors acquire the ability to lead and direct pleasure boats on longer voyages, allowing them to explore and enjoy the sea in a broader and safer way.
