How to work in the nautical sector?

The nautical sector offers multiple job opportunities for those who wish to develop their career at sea. To access these jobs, it is essential to have the appropriate training and certifications. STCW Convention (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) sets international standards for training and certification for seafarers.

Basic Training in Maritime Safety STCW

One of the first steps to work in this area is to obtain the Basic Training Certificate in Maritime Safety, which trains candidates to respond to emergencies on board, including firefighting, rescue, survival and accident prevention.

Course structure

This course has a total duration of 70 hours, distributed in:

• 45 hours of theory
• 25 hours of practice

The content is divided into four main modules:

1. Survival at sea in case of abandonment of ship
2. Fire prevention and fighting
3. First aid
4. Safety at work and social responsibilities

Validity and renewal

The certificate is valid for 5 yearsIt is important to renew it before its expiration date at any maritime captaincy to continue practicing professionally.

With this certificate, it is possible to perform various functions within the maritime sector, such as:

• Sailor in nautical clubs, marinas or sports ports.
• Sailor on professional ships or boats.
• Crew member on cruise ships, in various operational areas.
• Assistant on recreational nautical activities boats (such as water skiing, diving or jet skiing).
• Sailor on fishing boats, with the additional obtaining of the Fisherman Sailor card.

Steps to follow after completing the course

Upon completion of training, the following procedures must be completed:

1. Request the issuance of the Basic Training Certificate in Maritime Safety.
2. Pass a medical examination for maritime embarkation at the Social Institute of the Navy (ISM).
3. Obtaining the Maritime Book, document issued by the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy, requested at the Maritime Captaincy.
